Guide to Painting Your Kitchen Cabinets

Guide to Painting Your Kitchen Cabinets

Everyone wants to be able to have a kitchen that looks as aesthetically pleasing as possible. You may love your kitchen as it is but still feel as if a certain something is missing. Sometimes adding a bit of color to the kitchen can really change things up and turn it into the perfect environment to suit your sense of style. For this reason, many people make the decision to paint their kitchen cabinets.

If you have never tried to paint kitchen cabinets before, then you may be wondering what you are getting yourself into. There are several things that you should know about the process in order to ensure that things go smoothly. It isn’t anything that should intimidate you but it will certainly be worthwhile to know what you can expect. When you go into the situation fully prepared, you will be able to expect fantastic results.

Consider What Type of Cabinets You Have

The first thing that you need to do is consider what types of cabinets you have. If you have metal cabinets, wood cabinets, or wood laminate cabinets, then everything will be fine. Those who have cabinets made out of some type of plastic may need to buy a special type of paint to get the best results. Most people have cabinets that are made out of wood so you are likely fine to proceed with any type of paint that you desire.

Remove the Cabinet Doors and Any Hardware

You need to remove the cabinet doors and also take off any hardware that is on the cabinets. Removing the hardware is going to allow you to paint the cabinets completely without having to worry about painting over your hinges or handles. It shouldn’t be tough to remove the cabinet doors so this step is definitely something that you are going to want to do. Failing to do this step will make painting the cabinets a little more arduous so take the time to remove the doors.

Clean the Cabinets Thoroughly

Cleaning the cabinets up before you get started is highly recommended. Kitchens are something that people use every single day and the cabinets may have stains or grease on them. Clean them thoroughly with soapy water in order to get them ready for the next step of the process.

Sand the Cabinets

Sanding the cabinets down is very important to do before you start applying any type of primer or paint. If you do not sand the cabinets, then the paint is not going to apply as evenly as you would like. You may notice some of the old color bleeding through and it could take several more coats of paint than it would otherwise. Using a traditional sanding block should be just fine and it won’t take too long to get the job done.

Apply Your Primer

Applying a coat of primer can help your paint job to turn out much nicer. It is worth doing because you want to ensure that the paint is going to bond properly when you apply it to your cabinets. When you want everything to look as nice as possible, it makes sense to go ahead and apply a coat of primer. There are also some paints that have primer included so you could decide to go that route.

Paint the Cabinets

Now that all of the preparations have been completed, you will be able to start painting the cabinets. Be as thorough as possible and do your best to get the corners with a detail brush. Painting the openings and edges first is a good idea. You can then work on the molding, drawers, and, finally, the large sections of the kitchen cabinets.

Saving the doors for last is a sensible idea. You can paint those anywhere that you would like and then hang them back up after they have dried. Remember to wait for everything to dry before putting the hardware back on the cabinets too. It may seem to be common sense but sometimes people can become overzealous when they are tired of painting. This process shouldn’t take too long and you’ll have great results if you followed all of the steps.
