Should I Buy The Paint Myself When Hiring a Painting Contractor?
Let us ask you this:
Would you purchase a carpenter’s lumber?
A plumber’s piping?
How about an electrician’s wire?
Maybe a roofer’s shingles?
If you answered NO to any of these then why would you buy a painting contractors paint?
Painters usually have a “go to” paint that they work with a lot. One that they know and trust will give the results that they look for in a finished product. One that has a flow and consistency that they are use to and enhances their efficiency.
Asking a painter to use something outside of their comfort zone and routine does not always yield bad results. The odds are increased by doing so.
Let me tell you a story about Dave & Tonya.
Tonya washes all her families’ clothes and she sends her husband, Dave, to get some laundry detergent. Tonya doesn’t tell Dave what brand to get so he picks out the one that’s on sale and saves about $0.75 cents. Life is great! Or so Dave thought…
Tonya uses the detergent and soon realizes that it does not last nearly as long as her trusted go-to detergent nor does it leave the clothes feeling clean & fresh, therefore, she ends up using more of it and also spends more time doing the laundry. Tonya is not happy. Dave did not mean to make Tonya’s job harder, but he does not do enough laundry to make an informed buying decision on laundry detergent.
The detergent that Tonya always used had qualities in it that made her task easier and reduced her laundry cleaning time. Paints also have different qualities in it that can affect time and labor. If a customer asked us to give them an estimate knowing that they have purchased paint we are unfamiliar with, chances are that our price will be higher than if we quote the job with products we are familiar with.
Stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s do a great job of putting all these ideas into your head and then try to close the sale by offering the 2-DAY WEEKEND ONLY SALE!! Please consult with us or your contractor before making any purchases! We greatly appreciate it.
