Uncovering the Myth of Paint & Primer in One

Uncovering the myth of Paint And Primer in One

There’s this myth that has been going on for a while, started by the Bog box stores- One Coat Coverage; Paint and Primer in one. This misconception was obviously started to sell more paints. The truth is that it does not work for the quality-driven client. Let’s see why this is so.

Why does this myth not work for quality, long lasting paint job?

Primer is solely made to help you prepare the surface so that you can apply the finished product, which in this case is the paint. It is meant to form a sound barrier on untreated surface, sealing it first for the best adhesion possible.

Whenever you are doing a paint job on plaster, sheet rock or a raw wood, a quality primer like latex and oil-base should first be applied. Most primers lack any visible sheen, and therefore end up leaving the surface dull for the final finish paint.

When you want to apply paint over a surface that’s already painted, the paint is supposed to work as a primer. It may not be necessary that you use a primer because the surface you are painting is already sealed. In any case, if you need to prime over the color to change it, primer is made for this and is not as costly as a finish coat.

Tips for using a Primer

  • Before applying the final coat, light gray tinted primer, one coat applied, allows you to notice any discrepancies on the wall. This helps you to conduct any necessary renovations and fixes, and then re-prime those spots again after you are done.
  • Sand the primer lightly after curing, and then vacuum or wipe off. Doing so helps open the primer surface slightly so that there can be better adhesion when you apply the final coat.
  • Do not be dubbed that all primers are the same. They are not. Oil primers are built for a specific purpose.
  • Experienced painters have revealed that blocking primers that are oil based tend to work better. It covers better and blocks stains better. However latex primers & paint have come a LONG way in the recent years & there are now several good alternatives to oils.
