Should You Paint Behind Refrigerators and Light Switches?

What Should You Paint Behind?

The home renovation world is actually somewhat split on Should You Paint Behind Refrigerators and Light Switches. There is a general consensus that you need to paint behind your couch, chairs, and even bookshelves that move. However, your refrigerator is probably in the same spot where it’s always been. Most people don’t move their refrigerators over the course of their homeownership. Many also do not take off their light switch plates. Some will say that painting behind these things is a waste of time, but that’s just not the case. Paintingbehind stationary objects protects your walls from damage, gives you the option to make changes later, and helps you match paint in the future.

Protect Your Walls

Your walls can receive damage by heat, humidity, stains, and much more. Your paint should make your home look a certain way. However, it also functions to protect your walls. Paint forms a barrier that keeps moisture from invading the wood or drywall of your home. It also shields heat and humidity that can warp wood or encourage mold growth. If you paint behind your refrigerator, you’ll be bolstering the protection of your wall in that spot. If you have ever reached behind your fridge, you know how warm it can be back there. Mold loves warm, dark places in which to grow. Once you add moisture, mold can proliferate very quickly. Paint helps protect you from that.

You should paint behind your light switches to help protect your walls for the same considerations. You should also paint your light switches unless they are a color you feel matches well.

Have Options

If you choose to not paint behind your refrigerator, you will be stuck with that decision until you paint again. If you frame your refrigerator but decide you want a different refrigerator in the future, you have to buy one the exact same size or larger. Otherwise, you’ll have a border around your refrigerator that is the color of the old paint. You will not be able to move your refrigerator unless you are okay with discoloration on the walls. You probably won’t have the opportunity to paint over the discolored part if it has been there for more than a few months. A new coat of paint likely won’t match the original coat of paint even if it’s the exact same color. You might never notice it until you apply a coat of the original color and they no longer match.

Match Paint in the Future

If you really like your paint color, you should paint behind light switches and the refrigerator because those places won’t discolor as quickly as exposed paint will. When it comes time to repaint, you can use those areas as references to match paint. Some paint mixers can actually take a flake of paint and mix the exact same color. You would be surprised how much your paint color changes without you ever noticing.

Paint behind everything in your home, even if it doesn’t move. You’ll be glad you did.
